Desperate Ways

Continuing Louise McCorkindale's collaboration with multi-instrumentalist Vitaliy Tkachuk and artist Sarah Baganz, "Desperate Ways" is another beautiful and moving piece of audio-visual art.

The background to “Desperate Ways”:

“Russia invaded Ukraine on the 24th of February, 2022, and the news included interviews with families who were trying to cross the border to escape the bombing. At the border, the men were going back to the war, and the women were taking the children across the border to safety.

I was struck by the courage of ordinary people, and the terrible decisions they have to make when they are caught up in a war. I wrote the lyrics from what people had said in interviews, but I wanted the song to be true to their story, and to minimise any projection on my part, so there was quite a bit of tweaking after the first burst of conviction.

Then one night I picked up my trusty tenor ukulele and it just handed me the melody, with a moment’s hesitation on my part to make the leap to the chorus, and a bit of scuttering about to find the chords. When it was recorded, Vitaliy’s beautifully sparse and measured guitar part already felt complete in itself, but I had just started working with Ben and couldn’t resist trying cello on the track too, and the expressive but restrained cello part he created felt like an element I hadn’t known was missing.

And when Sarah showed me her initial sketches for the project, I felt the emotional core of the song really opening up out of her wonderful visual story-telling. It is a joy to be working with such amazing artists and to see how they have brought this song to life. Any proceeds will be donated to the British Red Cross.”
