Muckish Mountain

about

The Eastern Swell release “Muckish Mountain” as a video and download available from Friday November 25th 2016. The second single to be lifted from their critically acclaimed debut album “One Day, A Flood”, it finds the band in reflective mode.

Penned by guitarist/vocalist Chris Reeve (with production and string arrangement by Pete Harvey of Modern Studies, Meursault and King Creosote repute), it’s one of the mellower moments from the album, echoing the pastoral, folk rock feel of Fairport Convention or Pentangle.

Lyrically, it’s full of Emerald Isle imagery as vocalist Lainie Urquhart intones: “Sun's going down. The peat's blackened my boots. The Irish turf is dark at the roots. And so are you”, “I’ll be drowning my doubts in dark Irish Stout” and “Feast and the famine on Donegal hills”, all conjuring up a dark night of the soul over the water. But escape is dreamt of: “America bound, leaving behind this poor Irish town. Don't leave me alone on the mountain side.”

lyrics

MUCKISH MOUNTAIN

SUN'S GOING DOWN.
THE PEAT'S BLACKENED MY BOOTS.
THE IRISH TURF IS DARK AT THE ROOTS.
AND SO ARE YOU.

GRIT IN MY EYES AND SWEAT RUNNING DOWN MY NECK.
A SMILE FROM YOU AND I FORGET HOW FAR WE'VE STILL GOT TO GO.

I'M KICKING UP GRAVEL ON THE MOUNTAIN TRACK.
THE WIND AND RAIN ARE STARTING TO LASH.
DO WE KNOW THE WAY BACK WHERE WE CAME?

I'LL BE DRINKING TONIGHT ALL THE WHISKEY IN SIGHT,
IF I MAKE IT DOWN FROM THIS GREAT MOUNTAIN,
THOUGH I'M STARTING TO THINK THAT WONT HAPPEN.
I'LL BE DROWNING MY DOUBTS IN DARK IRISH STOUT
IF WE MAKE IT BACK TO YOUR COUNTRY HOUSE I'LL BE A HAPPIER MAN,
DON'T YOU DOUBT.

FEAST AND THE FAMINE ON DONEGAL HILLS.
WORKHOUSE SOULS THEY'RE GIVING ME CHILLS.
WATCHING THIS FOOL ON THE HILL.
I'M LOST AND LONELY ON THIS GIANT'S BACK.
SEVEN SISTERS ALL TURNING THEIR BACKS.
I'M IN NEED OF RESCUE.
TEARS ON THE BRIDGE.
AMERICA BOUND, LEAVING BEHIND THIS POOR IRISH TOWN.
DON'T LEAVE ME ALONE ON THE MOUNTAIN SIDE.

THE HIGHER I CLIMB THE FURTHER I FALL.
WHEN I GET BACK I'LL DRINK TO YOU ALL.
IF I GET BACK, IF I GET BACK AT ALL.
THE BLOOD RED SKY'S THE SUN'S LAST CALL.
I WANT TO GET BACK BUT MY HEART KEEPS FALLING.
IF I GET BACK, IF GET BACK AT ALL.
